Lataliana means ’Place of Tall Trees’ and on arrival at the villa it’s easy to understand why. From the towering 30-year-old baobab ‘upside down tree’ in the garden of one of the bedrooms to the spectacular flame trees that drop their scarlet petals into one of the open-air bathrooms, Lataliana is bounded by some of the most beautiful trees in the district. Even the twisted door handles are fashioned from namesake liana vines.

The villa comprises four clusters of single-storey buildings linked by covered walkways, terraces, ornamental ponds and secret gardens, offering private spaces that guests can escape to, or social areas for dining, relaxing and recreation. Characterized by white pillars, ironwood shingle roofs, sliding glass doors with teakwood frames, and a swimming pool that meanders through the centre of the flat velvety lawn, Lataliana oozes sophistication and contemporary charm harmonized with artistic flair, a touch of local history and more than a nod to Balinese Hindu culture. The villa’s sophistication spills across into the superb gourmet cuisine prepared and cooked by three excellent chefs, and the 24-hour, ‘Four Seasons’- trained butler service.

The entrance to Lataliana I brings guests through a covered walkway into an open-sided dining pavilion which forms the hub of the villa and is positioned to one side of the feature swimming pool. At the top end of the pool is the joglo balé pavilion, behind which two separate entrances lead to the two very private self-contained guest suites. At the far end of the pool is a wide building housing one of the master bedrooms, the living room and the TV room. Beyond here, linked by a walkway and separated by ornamental ponds are two more bedrooms - one of which is the second master - and a kitchenette. The main service kitchen is situated out of sight at the back of the dining pavilion, while another unique thatched gazebo beckons from the opposite side of the pool.

All five of Lataliana’s bedrooms are equipped with air conditioning, ceiling fans, satellite channel TVs and Blu-ray disc players. Each has its own unique character or colour scheme - ranging from gold to pink to turquoise - and each is elegantly furnished with beds, cabinets, and chests fashioned from the recycled wood of a traditional sailing boat. Four bedrooms feature king-size beds (two of which can be converted to twins) while the smallest bedroom is furnished with a queen-size bed. The two master bedrooms have retractable mosquito nets around their beds. All five en-suite bathrooms are remarkably spacious; finished with non-slip acid marble floors, and fitted with twin washbasins, soaking tubs, and monsoon showers that are open to the sky in private walled courtyards or gardens. Even the old ship’s rum barrels have been used to create the vanity units in one of the bathrooms.

Living Room
The large living room has glass doors at both the front and the back that can be opened for cross ventilation or closed for air-conditioned comfort (ceiling fans are also an option). This elegant room is furnished with a baby grand piano, an Oriental rug, and segmented sofas and modern daybeds big enough to accommodate ten people. Soaring above the terrazzo floor is a pitched roof with a skylight at its pinnacle which channels sunlight or moonlight into the room and highlights a spectacular chandelier reminiscent of a bunch of gold ribbons. The gold theme is carried through to a fountain ornamenting the pond that lies just beyond this room. The living room is perfect for entertaining as it opens to a broad covered terrace running the length of the building, just a step or two above the pool deck.

TV Room
Connected to the living room is an air-conditioned home theatre room with Bose surround sound and a 51-inch flat-screen satellite-channel TV and Blu-ray disc player, complemented by a library of 1000 DVDs. The room is furnished with three comfortable sofas, two of which are customized chaise lounges, each big enough for two, plus a large daybed-type-sofa big enough for at least four, all are crafted from the recycled wood of an old phinisi boat. Fitted shelves on one wall are filled with books while glass doors open to the covered terrace at the front.

Dining Room
Open on three sides to the pool deck, the dining pavilion features a terrazzo floor and stone pillars supporting a vaulted wood-lined roof. Cooled by natural breezes and four ceiling fans, it is furnished with a solid wood table seating 16 and a sideboard. A guest wash room also leads off the dining pavilion, and to one side is a pond which carries the sound of water in motion as it cascades over a traditional wooden mortar that was originally used for threshing rice.

The villa’s commercial kitchen, professionally equipped with stainless steel appliances, is conveniently situated behind the dining pavilion and is the domain of Lata Liana’s three chefs. In addition, a small kitchenette for guest use is positioned next to the bedrooms towards the back of the property, and equipped with a kettle, coffee maker, toaster and fridge.

Garden and Pool
The 25-metre free-form swimming pool features comfortable lounging shelves at two ends and a bubbling water feature crafted from an old millstone. Three ancient frangipani trees have been transplanted around the pool deck, together with a unique relaxation gazebo - actually a traditional, Indonesian, grass-roofed cowshed, which presents an unusual twist on the more-familiar form of balé pavilion. At the head of the pool, presiding over the garden is a second balé, featuring the ornately-carved core of an antique timber joglo building from Java, complete with a typical trapezium-shaped roof. This multipurpose structure can be used as a wedding pavilion, a bar area with a portable bar, or a dining venue with a removable awning that extends to the four corners of the raised deck. To one side of this is a gamelan of smiling musicians depicted in white stone.

Lataliana II
Lataliana II is a delightfully private, spacious and elegant two-bed roomed villa, complete with a 15-metre free-form swimming pool and set within a very pretty garden. The property is bounded by Lata Liana’s namesake tall trees and signature limestone walls, composed of random shaped rocks, which have been pieced together like a jigsaw puzzle. The villa’s modern design celebrates tradition, comfort, and twenty-first century lifestyle embellished with a creative flourish. Here, guests can enjoy custom-made furnishings crafted from the century-old recycled timbers of an Indonesian phinisi sailing boat, high-tech amenities, top quality fixtures and fittings, and yielding sofas and beds.

The beauty of Lataliana II is that it presents two completely independent buildings, allowing adults and children to truly escape from one another. One is a single-storey ‘longhouse’ - perfect for a couple - with a glamorous bedroom and bathroom complemented by a hugely spacious living and dining room incorporating a kitchen. The other building sleeps up to six people and is modeled on a two-storey lumbung (traditional Indonesian rice barn), specifically designed for youngsters and/or teenagers and offering all the independence and amenities that they could possibly wish for. Alternatively, the lumbung can be enjoyed by two adults, or by a family of up to six. The sophistication of Lata Liana spills across into the superb gourmet cuisine prepared and cooked by three excellent chefs and the 24-hour, Four Seasons Hotel-trained butlers.

Lata Liana II’s main single-storey building stretches the full length of the garden like a Bornean longhouse, comprising the master bedroom with its ensuite bathroom, and an expansive open-plan living and dining room with a kitchenette at one end.

On the opposite side of the pool is a stand-alone two-storey building constructed in the architectural style of a traditional lumbung or rice granary with a distinctive bonnet-shaped roof. On the upper floor is a large bedroom, while the ground floor presents a tiny kitchenette and an indoor-outdoor bathroom. Built into the lumbung, sheltered by a roof and overlooking the pool, is an elevated, open-sided relaxation space.

Master bedroom
The spacious air-conditioned master bedroom has a non-slip acid marble floor and bay-shaped French windows that fold open to the swimming pool. Equipped with a satellite-channel TV, Blu-ray disc player, iPod dock and ceiling fan, the room is furnished with a king-size bed, reading lamps, and cabinets crafted from the recycled wood of an old phinisi schooner. The ceiling is fitted with runners that support an innovative retractable mosquito net, which forms a curtain around the bed. The large en-suite bathroom is light and airy, featuring a non-slip floor, twin washbasins, hanging and storage space, a freestanding bathtub for two, and a walk-in rain shower and toilet in separate cubicles, both of which open on one side to the fresh air.

3.2 Lumbung bedroom
Designed with children or teenagers in mind (but equally suitable for a family happy to share their space), the lumbung offers a fully air-conditioned, two-level bedroom that can comfortably accommodate six. Here, a king-size bed converts to a pair of twins, a double bed reminiscent of a ship’s berth is built into the wall, and two sofas (one of which provides two single mattresses) are positioned on a mezzanine accessed via a solid wooden ladder. The bedroom’s timber floor extends through sliding glass doors onto a wooden balcony overlooking the garden and pool and framed by the bonnet-shaped roof. The bedroom is equipped with a satellite-channel TV, Blu-ray disc player, iPod dock and ceiling fan.

The bathroom is located downstairs and fitted with a single washbasin and toilet, a non-s lip floor, a unit with hanging and storage space, and a funky wall mirror that literally makes a splash with its water-splatter design. Glass doors lead to a pebble-floored private courtyard with an open-air rain shower featuring a terrazzo splash back in the shape of a surfboard. A tiny kitchenette on the ground floor is equipped with a fridge and sink.

Living, Dining and Kitchen
The main room is open-plan with air-conditioning, ceiling fans, and a non-slip floor throughout, yet it features two distinct areas: the living room under a high pitched roof with a skylight and glass doors front and back, and the dining room and kitchenette under a flat roof. The living space is furnished with huge and exceptionally comfortable sofa-style daybeds with deep cushions, a coffee table, satellite channel TV, Blu-ray disc player and iPod dock. The dining area is furnished with a square table for eight. Adjacent to this, the kitchenette is built into the end wall and fitted with a marble worktop and a two-burner gas hob. It is equipped with a fridge, Nespresso coffee machine, and cupboards filled with quality glassware and crockery. This kitchenette is for guest use while Lata Liana’s superb cuisine is prepared in the enclave’s professional kitchen, which is the domain of the chefs.

Sliding glass doors from the living area open onto the timber pool deck, which is partially sheltered by a pergola roof. Another set of glass doors beside the kitchen area open to a pretty patio with just enough space for a circular table and two chairs guarded by an ancient frangipani tree.

Garden and Pool
The 15-metre free-form swimming pool curves across the flat lawn, bordering both the lumbung and main house with steps on either side. The garden is filled with shrubs and colourful bougainvillea, parlour palms, lipstick palms and travellers’ palms, two gnarled and ancient frangipanis, a butterfly tree and one of the tall, mature trees from the villa takes its name. Sheltered underneath the balcony of the lumbung is a large open-sided relaxation space filled with mattresses and cushions. A barbecue is also provided.

Family-friendly advantages of villa stays include having access to your own private facilities, such as a swimming pool, living space and gardens and having the freedom to use them whenever you want. Knowing that the kids can run around happily, independently and safely, without you having to worry about other guests, is a real plus - and one that means parents are certain to have a more relaxed holiday too.

Lata Liana II offers a self-contained lumbung building specifically designed with older kids in mind. The lumbung has sleeping room for six and incorporates a sitting area equipped with a TV and Blu-ray disc player and iPod dock. The villa has access to a library of 1000 DVDs, toys and a Playstation (coming soon), while the garden presents a lovely swimming pool.

Lataliana Estate
The LataLiana Estate comprises a majestic five-bedroom villa and a charming two-bedroom villa, as well as a romantic suite that can only be booked in conjunction with one of the villas. This setup suits groups as well as two or three families travelling with an independe ntcouple or elderly relatives who might prefer the tranquil sanctuary of the independent suite. The estate also makes a wonderful wedding venue, and the suite an idyllic honeymoon pad.

This exclusive complex is one of Bali’s most stylish. The villas feature covered walkways, terraces, ornamental ponds, meandering pools and secret gardens, offering the opportunity for both private and sociable occasions. The villas ooze sophistication, contemporary charm and modern facilities, and are strongly influenced by Balinese-Hindu culture - standouts include the custom-made furnishings crafted from centuries-old recycled timbers; the historic joglo (garden pavilion) in the larger Villa LataLiana I; and a two-storey building modelled on a traditional lumbung (rice barn) in Villa LataLiana II.

The villas benefit from warm, generous hospitality, and are attended to by an experienced 22-strong staff team, which includes a manager, three resident chefs and 24-hour butlers. Seminyak’s world-class restaurants, bars, boutiques, spas and sunset beach are all a short walk or a (complimentary) shuttle ride away.
